To celebrate World Environment Day, which every year falls on June 5, 10-year-old Kids.Earth.Org reader Leisha Sabharwal wrote a poem and put together a presentation where she reflected on the meaning of this important day and actionable steps everyone can do to protect the environment.

In a world of change, Earth’s sigs are heard,
Warming air, shifting seasons, a tale absurd.
Nature once thrived perfectly,
Now it’s getting destroyed abundantly.
Icebergs weep in the melting seas,
A chorus of distress, carried by the breeze,
Forests weep with their leaves in sorrow.
Still have a hope that the sun will shine tomorrow.
Man-made fantasies haunt the air.
Smoke and chemicals, hard to bear.
The lungs of Earth, struggling to breathe,
A plea for change, a chance to retrieve.
Reduce, reuse, recycle, take a stand,
Every step for Mother Earth, hand in hand.
In classrooms and beyond, ket awareness bloom,
We are the generation prepared to face the gloom.
Hope remains in every heart,
Let’s be united and glow in the dark.
Through mindful choices, big and small,
We can rewrite the future and hear Mother Earth’s call.
World Environmnet Day, established by the UN in 1972, is celebrated annually on June 5th. It aims to raise global awareness and encourage actions for the protection of our environment.
It serves as a platform for environmental education, activism, and policy changes, bringing together governments, organizations, and individuals.
For me, World Environment Day is a significant day celebrated on June 5th when everyone thinks about how to help the planet. It’s important because it teaches us about protecting nature, keeping the environment clean, and saving animals and plants. On this day, everyone can take initiatives like planting trees, using the 3R strategy, cleaning up oceans and parks, etc.
It’s a reminder that we all need to work together to make sure our Earth stays healthy and beautiful for the future generations.

2021: started gaining knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and environmental issues; I became Environment Ambassador for WISE India, and founded the Saving Earth Club.
2022: Friends and family joined the Saving Earth Club, collectively raised awareness about environmental conservation, and encouraged others to take small steps to protect the planet.
2023: I was interview by different newspapers, conducted awareness programs in schools which were broadcasted on news channels, created a petition urging the Indian Government to take action for the planet, and was selected to meet Honorable President of India, Shrimati Draupadi Murmu, for environmental initiatives.
